Mystic Vision: A Surrealist Ball

I am honored to be an invited reader at the 2026 PRS Surrealist Ball. Please come and support the mission of The Philosophical Research Society, celebrate the centennial anniversary of the birth of Betye Saar, and live a fantastical, alternate dream reality for one magical night!

Mystic Vision is an altar to memory, to intuition, and to the unseen world that shapes our lives. This year’s Surrealist Ball at the Philosophical Research Society honors the centennial birthday of artist Betye Saar, celebrating a century of her visionary practice and enduring influence in Los Angeles and beyond. Inspired by Saar’s assemblage language and spiritual cosmology, the evening transforms the PRS campus into an altar where the personal and the ancestral converge. Guests are not merely attendees, but participants in a collective ritual: adorned as talismans, dressed as relics, embodiments of protection, vision, and resistance.

Drawing from Saar’s use of found objects, iconography, and the charged symbolism of the eye, the evening centers on the act of seeing: seeing beyond illusion, beyond surface, into layered histories and future possibilities. The space becomes an immersive assemblage: mirrors, eyes, and reflective surfaces recur as portals of perception, invoking Saar’s enduring engagement with sight as both protection and revelation.

A central ceremonial moment: the Opening of the Eye: calls the room into communion. A collective invocation honors lineage, protection, and the radical act of imagination, offered in tribute to Saar’s hundred years of world-building and cultural alchemy.

Guests are invited to dress as extensions of the exhibition and assemblages in motion. Think: protective charms, spirit vessels, cosmic eyes, relics of past and future selves.

At its heart, Mystic Vision is about gathering and about creating a shared psychic space where art, ritual, and community intertwine. It is a night to be seen and to see differently. To honor the power of art, stories, and bodies as carriers of meaning.

Proceeds support the continuing work and vision of The Philosophical Research Society.

Crossing Destinies: Collective Storytelling Through Fragments of Imagination

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM | IN-PERSON WORKSHOP | THE COLLEGE OF PSYCHIC STUDIES

with BELL SENLLE and JAMES JUDE

A participatory Tarot experience where stories pass between strangers and meaning emerges in the spaces between them.

This is an interactive workshop in which we will work with Tarot as a tool for constellation building. Working with your own Tarot card alongside those of your neighbours, you'll generate interlinked past, present and future stories. As these narratives are shared, considered, altered and retold, the group builds a collective 'spread', profoundly meaningful for all as connections emerge across the room.

You do not need any familiarity with Tarot to join this experience. Bel and James will guide you through different interpretative techniques rooted in visual language, Tarot numerology and free-associative and intuitive skills.

This in-person workshop includes:

  • An interactive, collaborative group Tarot reading

  • Techniques for building Tarot constellations across a group

  • Various interpretative approaches to the Tarot

  • How to apply Tarot in group readings, events, creative work and social gatherings

Tarot Talk Show with Andrea Aste - The Tarot of Crossed Destinies

Andrea Aste is a multimedia visionary artist and animator, published author and illustrator. His works have been exhibited worldwide in prestigious museums, including the Musée Grévin in Paris, Montreal and Geneva and the Natural Science Museum in Turin, art galleries such as the Guildhall Gallery, London, and at acclaimed art events like the Venice Biennale (2015).

After his much-acclaimed work as set designer for the international stage performer Arturo Brachetti, Aste relocated his studio to the UK, further developing his unique techniques for live on-stage illustration and animation, including for the horror show Shiver (2021), in collaboration with Sinister Masterplan and performed at the Grant Museum of Zoology, London, and Hide (2023) presented at London’s prestigious Vault Festival.

In the world of Tarot and graphic novels, Aste is famous for his card decks and hybrid novels: The Book of Shadows: An Alchemist’s Story (2023), The Tarot of Light and Shadow (2020) and The Lost Code of Tarot (2017). He illustrated and authored Oracolarium (2020), the first oracle deck whose cards come to life with augmented reality animations when seen with a mobile app.

His latest Tarot, The Tarot of Crossed Destinies, reimagines the world of Italo Calvino’s travelers from his famous novel, The Castle of Crossed Destinies.

“I wanted to create a Tarot deck with that same sense of narrative depth, where each card illustration contributes to a grand design of interwoven images, and thus, tales. The Tarot of Crossed Destinies was born, imagined as a myriorama.”

Please join me on Saturday, July 18th when I welcome Andrea Aste to Tarot Talk Show to wander the halls of his castle, arranging and rearranging the narrative as we go.

Tarot Show 'n' Tell | The Mamluk Playing Cards: A Conversation with Ulrich Kaltenborn aka Trzes

Join me, James Jude, for a very special edition of Tarot Show 'n' Tell at TarotArts as I welcome researcher and deck creator Ulrich Kaltenborn (aka Trzes) for a live conversation exploring one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of cards.

During a rare visit from Germany, restoration artist Kaltenborn drops by TarotArts to talk about the history and legacy of the remarkable mulūk wanuwwāb Arabic playing cards, commonly known as the Mamluk Deck.

Before playing cards were introduced to Europe and Tarot subsequently emerged in Renaissance Italy, playing cards flourished in the Islamic world. The mulūk wanuwwāb are believed to be the first playing cards introduced to Europe in the late 14th century via the Mamluk empire of Egypt. The striking similarities in the design of the early Italian Tarot decks with the Mamluk cards makes clear their influence in the development and evolution of Tarot.

Through historical images, restored artwork, and audience discussion, you'll discover why these extraordinary cards continue to captivate collectors, historians, and Tarot enthusiasts alike.

Tarot Talk Show with Lorriane Anderson

Where one journey ends, a new one begins and the wheel turns yet again...

The bestselling Seasons of the Witch series continues its odyssey, this time unveiling a beautiful, brand new series featuring the four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. The adventure begins with the Winter Tarot, where familiar elements of the tried and true Rider-Waite-Smith system are reimagined in an evocative story of festive maidens, snowy creatures and frosty potions; brews and magical tools. Seventy-eight cards unearth wintry themes of rest, reflection and – of course – the sabbats too. Explore how the harmonic relationship between Yule, Imbolc and the earth's barest season seamlessly blend to unlock deep, divinatory wisdom, all while embracing a new way for the tarot to shift its energy throughout the year.

Lorriane Anderson is a best-selling author, spiritual teacher, and internationally recognized tarot and oracle expert. She views the seasons, sabbats, moon phases, and natural cycles as portals for personal growth and deep soul remembrance. Her work blends grounded earth wisdom with celestial insight, guiding others to develop a more intuitive and meaningful connection to themselves and the world around them.

She is the creator of numerous beloved books and decks, including the Seasons of the Witch oracle series, which has become a staple in the modern mystic’s collection. Her work has been featured in Oprah Daily, The Spruce, Reader’s Digest, Kindred Spirit, VoyageLA, and The Daily Star, among others.

THE ENIGMATIC TAROT: Deciphering Italy’s Most Curious Decks

Buried deep in Tarot’s forgotten past are decks so strange and beautiful, they’re impossible to ignore—but how can we understand them today as modern practitioners?

The earliest Tarot decks emerged in 15th-century Italy, less than 50 years after playing cards were introduced to Europe.  This period became one of experimentation and invention—long before the Marseille tradition brought standardization over a century later.  Despite their variety, many early decks feature recognizable versions of the Major Arcana we know today—with a few fascinating exceptions. These rogue decks are beautifully illustrated and deeply compelling, but are they readable?  Are they even truly Tarot?  How can we relate to them today?

Join Tarot reader and historian James Jude of James Jude Tarot for an in-depth look at three of Italy’s most fascinating outliers: the Sola Busca, the so-called Mantegna, and the Minchiate in interactive workshops designed to engage you with these historical decks.  If you’ve heard the names but weren’t sure what they meant—or if you’ve seen the cards and wondered how to use them—this is your chance to explore their history, symbolism, and relevance today.

Price: $35 per workshop or three-workshop pass for $90*

*These are in-person workshops at TarotArts and will not be recorded.  No refunds will be issued for missed workshops.

Whether you're new to astrology or looking to better integrate it with your Tarot practice, this workshop will give you practical tools to deepen your interpretations, including:

-  How the zodiac signs relate to the archetypal Tarot Majors
-  The planets and what they symbolize in a reading
-  Real-world examples and spreads that combine both systems
-  The logic of astrology and how to integrate it into your Tarot readings

This class is perfect for beginner and intermediate Tarot readers. No astrology experience is necessary—just bring your Tarot deck, a notebook, and your curiosity!

TAROT WITH INTENTION: Asking Questions That Open the Door to Insight

The true power of Tarot lies not in prediction, but in its ability to spark introspection and open channels to insight and guidance. A Tarot reading is most effective when approached with sincerity, presence, and a well-formed question—yet for many, crafting that question is the hardest part.

In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn how to ask better questions—ones that invite clarity, transformation, and meaningful dialogue with your Reader—even if that Reader is yourself. You’ll explore how intention shapes the reading, how different types of Readers work, and what role you play in the dynamic.

We’ll also cover practical ways to prepare—physically, mentally, and energetically—so that you’re fully present and ready to connect with your Reader, the cards, and whatever guidance may come through.

This workshop includes guided exercises, discussion, and real-world insight from the instructor’s experience reading for diverse clients across a range of settings.

TAROT TALK SHOW: MARK ROGERS

WELCOME TO THE SOUTHWESTERN BELLOWS
The Southwestern Bellows is a fantasy world with magic, monsters, adventure, tragedy, royalty, and…...nightmare-harvesting aliens that worship cactuses and eat gold. It is a breakaway human civilization started on another terraformed world by the Zeta Reticulan Grays. In the 1850s, human pioneers and other people from planet Earth were brought to this new planet to repopulate its lands … the reason why remains a mystery, although some believe it is an experiment that involves dreaming and nightmares.

Mark Rogers is a self-taught artist whose work is a mash-up of folk art, medieval painting, and fairy tale illustration. Obsessed with fantasy, and tales of the supernatural, Rogers creates narrative-driven paintings populated by fictional characters that inhabit his spooky and sometimes humorous oil paintings.

In 2025, Rogers published The Southwestern Bellows, vol. 1, a collection of illustrated short stories of esoteric Alien lore and an accounting of events that transpired in a faraway land: a human breakaway civilization called the Southwestern Bellows.

His work has been shown in exhibitions across the United States and has been sold worldwide. He lives and works in an old Victorian house in Fort Wayne, Indiana with his girlfriend and fellow painter-in-crime, Erica Peebus.

Tarot Talk Show - Gergely Bagameri

Saturday, June 14, 2025

  • 11:00 AM 12:00 PM

In this episode of Tarot Talk Show, James Ferrera welcomes guest Gergely Bagameri, creator of the unique and original Hidden Tales Tarot, RWSxTdM, Tarocchi ‘23, Midnight Deck and exquisite reproductions of the classic Jaques Vievil, Tarot de Paris and Tarocchino Milanese decks.

Bagameri is a Budapest-based card maker, illustrator and tarot reader, who has been studying and actively using cards for 7 years. He likes working with the decks he illustrates the most, because he knows all their lines intimately.

Bagameri sees Tarot as providing support in decision making, enabling someone to imagine themselves in different situations and helping them look deeper into themselves when examining the past and the present through the translation of pictures into words. He sees himself as an interpreter, who translates the language of the cards and explains them to the questioner. As the cards become sentences, the seeker confronts their fears, desires and discovers where to go next.

His original decks - the Midnight deck, a traditional Marseille tarot with fresh colors, strong lines and new faces; the RWSxTdM, a cheeky and grotesque pip card version of the well-known Rider Waite deck; the Tarocchi ‘23 and the latest Hidden Tales Tarot - are decks based on historical Italian cards, specifically designed to support storytelling. In addition, Bagameri has digitally restored some of the classics that he loves: Jacques Vieville's tarot, the Tarocchino Milanese and the Anonymous Paris Tarot, as well as a lesser-known poker card deck, the New Figures, illustrated by Adolf Iosifovich Charlemagne.
