When Travis McHenry published An Occult Guide to the Tarot last year, the opening line of his introduction was, “In 1993, I purchased my first deck of tarot cards after reading the young adult novel Eyes of the Tarot.” The author of that inspirational novel was Bruce Coville, who also tendered the foreword to McHenry’s Occult Guide.
Where Coville set McHenry on his Tarot path, McHenry set me on an exploration of Coville’s early “teen occult thrillers.” Eyes of the Tarot was the first one I read, of course, and I was surprised at Coville’s knowledge of and respect for the Tarot and its practitioners. It was so well realized, I wanted more, and so the next I read was Amulet of Doom, then Waiting Spirits, and finally Spirits and Spells. In all these, Coville creates compelling characters in impossible situations with a driving urgency out of which you can’t turn the pages fast enough to see what happens next!

Bruce Coville has published over 100 books for children and young adults, including the international bestseller My Teacher is an Alien, the“Unicorn Chronicles” series, and Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. His stories have won Children's Choice awards in a dozen states. Film versions of his books Aliens Ate My Homework and Aliens Stole My Body can be found on various streaming services.
Before becoming a full time writer in 1986, Bruce worked as a teacher, a toymaker, a magazine editor, a gravedigger, and a cookware salesman. In 2001 he founded FULL CAST AUDIO, an audiobook company devoted to full cast, unabridged recordings of material for family listening. He has produced over 120 audiobooks, directing and/or acting in most of them. Much in demand as a speaker and storyteller, he has spoken in schools on five continents.
Bruce lives in Syracuse, New York, with his wife, illustrator and author Katherine Coville.
